Grief Support Group Meetings

After the loss of a loved one, we experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions. The ever-changing emotions we experience with grief can catch us off guard, causing us to act out of character or differently than our typical personality or demeanor. We need a support system to help us move through our grief journey. We may think we can cope with the loss alone but that does not work.

Listen to one grieving widow who tells her view of the benefit of these groups.

When my husband died three years ago, I knew I could handle it. My family had a history of burying feelings and emotions with the loved one. Three years later, after all my busy-ness, redecorating and traveling, I was a mess. I was emotionally stuck, unable to move on. My mother was dying and I was falling apart. My grief for my mother was intense but it was clear to everyone and finally me that I had not grieved for my husband and finally the cork was out of the bottle.

I never grieved. I never had done the work that I need to rediscover my emotional compass. After going to the grief recovery group, listening to others as they found their way, and doing homework, I am slowly piecing my old self back together as my new self. It takes a village is a saying that fits my new mantra. Leaning on others, finding strength in a common need, a journey of self-discovery through a supportive group has made all the difference in my life.
